I have created this blog for the purpose of sharing everyday life in the northwoods with you! Since I was a small child, I have always loved the outdoors. There is so much to do, so much to see and so much to learn from our great outdoors. The more time I spend in nature, the more I have learned to appreciate it, not take it for granted, and maybe most importantly, to respect it.
What gets me outdoors…?
Fishing. I love fishing! I grew up fishing on Lake Michigan and the inland waters of northeast Wisconsin. I’ve also spent a lot of time on Lake Superior and the many rivers that flow into it. There is a TON of inland lakes around where I live to wet a line. I’ve since been extremely spoiled and Wayne took me to Canada a few times. The fishing we have here is fair, but once you’ve fished in Canada, you’re pretty much ruined from fishing anywhere else! It’s so bittersweet!!
Hunting. Hunting isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way of life in the north woods. The majority of the meat we live off comes from nature. Venison is the main staple food in this household. Along with grouse, fish, turkey and bear meat. Hunting is however also one of my favorite pastime’s. We raise walker hounds and hunt them on bear, bobcats and raccoons. Running dogs on game is one of the most thrilling and rewarding things I’ve ever done! Not to mention it’s also probably one of the most humbling and discouraging things I’ve also ever done also! Haha, I guess the pro’s are greater than the con’s or I wouldn’t keep doing it!
Trapping. I got interested in trapping just a few years ago, and I took an instant addiction to it! I find it so exhilarating to go check the trap line and see what’s been caught, see what I missed, and find out how I could have done things a little better. I’ve trapped beavers, muskrats, otter, coons, bobcats, a few bear (luckily the traps didn’t hold them!) and coyotes, weasels, skunks, fisher and foxes.
Crafting. I enjoy just being able to hang up my hat and boots, kick back and do something inside for once! Whether it be a simple painting on canvas, wood burning, making an array of different centerpieces, or my favorite….fall decorations. Gotta keep the inside looking pretty too!! It’s also a way to make great and caring gifts for others!
Gardening. This is ultimately something that I’ve loved to do since I was a little girl. My grandpa always had a huge garden and my grandma would work so hard preserving their bounty. My other grandpa had a big beautiful greenhouse, where he grew exotic and gorgeous flowers! Last year, Wayne and I had our best ever garden! The garden was absolutely beautiful in my book! It was the best and longest growing season I’ve ever seen and produced a plentiful harvest for us to preserve.
Recipes. Cooking is something I’ve also loved to do since I was just a small child. Everybody loves to eat right?? Well I love to experiment with new recipes all the time! It keeps things interesting that way, and I’ve always had people in my life willing to be my guinea pig and try new things! Pinterest is such an amazing way to keep your recipes organized and to find new things to try! We also have a lot of hounds…..so when something doesn’t turn out….I have a disposal! Haha!
So! I have compiled an array of things for you to look at and read here, and I am adding new stuff all the time! Whether you are seeking adventure stories from the outdoors, tasty, tried and true recipes, ideas and how-to’s for different projects, or just everyday living, I hope you find something here that sparks your interest. I would also like to hear from you! The Braggin’ Board is a really fun way to see what’s important to YOU! Whether it’s a 4″ perch your proud child caught, or a Boone and Crocket you landed last fall, I would love to see it! Send pictures and any info to… NorthwoodsEverydayLiving@gmail.com
Take a look around, there’s a lot to see! Let me know what you think!
Thanks again for visiting! See you next time!!
